Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
At Absolute Fighting Arts we teach all the traditional BJJ techniques and enhance these with devastating joint locks, throws, takedowns, lock flows, grip breaks and releases from Hapkido and Judo.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a self-defence martial art based on takedowns, grappling, and submission holds. BJJ focuses on taking an opponent to the ground, gaining control and using a variety of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It emphasizes leverage and technique to control and submit opponents, particularly in situations where size and strength may be disadvantaged.

The history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu traces back to Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese judoka who migrated to Brazil in the early 20th century. Maeda, also known as Count Koma, began teaching judo and his own style of grappling to Brazilian locals, including members of the Gracie family. Carlos Gracie, one of his students, further developed and refined these techniques, eventually founding what is now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Carlos Gracie and his younger brother Helio Gracie adapted the techniques to suit their smaller physiques, focusing on leverage, timing, and technique rather than brute strength. This evolution led to the development of BJJ as a distinct martial art, with a strong emphasis on ground fighting and submissions.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gained international recognition and popularity in the 20th century, particularly through the success of the Gracie family in mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions, most notably in the early days of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). Today, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is practiced worldwide, both as a martial art for self-defense and as a competitive sport with its own tournaments and championships. It is renowned for its effectiveness in real-life self-defense situations and its focus on continuous learning and technical mastery.
